Cheap Acoustic Guitars
One of the reasons for the cost of any instrument is the material used to make them. Wood is part of the cost. There are guitars made out of materials other than wood, such as graphite or plastic, but wood is also what makes even a cheap acoustic guitar have the sound youre looking for. If you buy a non-wood guitar, the sound wont be right to your ear and you may give up the guitar out of frustration. Its better to buy a cheap acoustic guitar made out of wood than save a few dollars to buy a plastic one that you probably wont like.
Even when looking for a cheap acoustic guitar, get one with a solid wood top, not a plywood top. A solid wood top will give you a richer, fuller tone. If you can afford it, get a guitar with a solid wood back and sides.
The Seagull S6 isnt exactly the most cheap acoustic guitar, but its an exceptional value for the money. No discussion about beginner guitars would be complete without talking about this one. It has a solid cedar top with mahogany sides and back, and produces a beautiful sound. It is one of those guitars that even professional musicians keep around, even when they have several more expensive guitars in their collections. At $400-$500, it can be more than what you thought about spending, but if youre at all serious about being a guitar player, you should seriously consider investing in this guitar. If you look online, you should be able to find some deals on this very common, highly-respected guitar.
Another excellent, less expensive choice when looking for a cheap acoustic guitar is the Yamaha F310. It has a solid spruce top with mahogany back and sides. Its price is much easier on the wallet at $150-$200, and is a common choice for serious beginners.
At the next price-point down for cheap acoustic guitars, from $120-$150, a great choice is the Epiphone DR-100. It has a select spruce top with a mahogany back and sides. This is a beginner instrument. Youll need to trade up at some point. If youre not sure about how long youre going to be interested in learning guitar, but still want to have a good quality instrument, this is a great choice.
In the under $100 range of cheap acoustic guitars, theres nothing really to recommend for a reasonable quality at the price. Many of them are barely playable. New guitars in this price range are one of the reasons that many young people give up on learning to play guitar. Theyre just not made well. If youre thinking of getting a cheap acoustic guitar for yourself or especially if youre wanting to get a guitar for your kid, who has been begging for one, avoid the under $100 range. Youll just kill the muse. Its infinitely better to avoid the $80 guitar at the discount mart and buy a guitar second-hand. Second-hand guitars have a life and richness all their own that you may even prefer to a new guitar. Visit a guitar dealer that has a wide selection of second-hand cheap acoustic guitars and play around until you find one that you like.
