Beginner Guitar

When looking for abeginner guitar, there are some things you need to think about.

If you have the money to invest in a high-quality guitar for your first guitar, its actually well worth it. The cost of a good acoustic beginner guitar is reflected in the tone of the guitar as well as how easy it is to play.

One of the best choices on the high-end is the Seagull S6, which is going to run you about $400-$500. Although its more expensive than what a beginner might expect to pay, its an exceptional guitar for that price. Many professionals will keep their Seagull S6 long after theyve amassed a large collection of other guitars. An equally good acoustic beginner guitar on the higher end of the price scale would be the Washburn D10S. It was voted #1 in Acoustic Guitar magazine for guitars under $500. Most people looking in this price range will like either the Washburn or the Seagull.

Down a notch in price for acoustic beginner guitars, the Yamaha F310, Takamine G-240 and Fender DG7 are all great choices. If youre looking for the least expensive acoustic beginner guitar, the Epiphone DR-100 is the way to go. Its a beginner instrument, so you will need to trade up at some point, but at around $120-$150 its a great acoustic beginner guitar for the price.

Avoid buying the under $100 guitars you see at the local discount mart. These guitars tend to be difficult for even experienced guitar players to play. Theyre just not very well made and tend to have an overly high action, meaning that there is a lot of space between the strings and the fingerboard. This can make playing frustrating, especially for a beginner.

If you only have less than $100 to spend, youre much better off getting a second-hand guitar. Second hand guitars have developed their own personalities. When you go to a guitar store to check out second-hand acoustic beginner guitars, and you see two Yamaha F310s, for example, try both of them. They will each have a slightly different personality that guitar players will often tell you is based on the personality of the previous owner.

Theres a saying that you should never buy a guitar from a jerk. Whether or not there is anything mystical about the personality of a guitar, people tend to treat their guitars like they treat people. A guitar that hasnt been cared for very well just isnt going to play as well as one that was cared for and tended to properly. So if abeginner guitar just doesnt feel right to you for some reason, even if it sounds good, choose another one.

Another thing to know as a beginner is that you should ask the salesperson at the store to play the guitars youre considering. A good salesperson at a good guitar store will know that a beginner may not be able to play yet, but they know what they want to sound like once they learn. They never know when theyre helping the next big guitar player buy their first acoustic beginner guitar.
